Official Government Announcement: Home Cervical Screening

Press release title: “Home testing kits for lifesaving checks against cervical cancer” Published: 23 June 2025 By: Department of Health and Social Care

The UK Government announced that home HPV self‑sampling kits will be offered as part of the cervical screening programme under the upcoming 10‑Year Health Plan.

Free Home Cervical Screening (HPV Test)
A simple test you can do at home

Cervical cancer can be prevented. The NHS now offers a free home test kit to help more women stay safe and healthy.

This leaflet explains what it is, who gets it, and how it works — in clear, easy language.

💛 What is the home test?

It is a small kit sent to your home. You take a quick sample yourself and post it back in the envelope provided.

No appointment. No long wait. No need to undress in a clinic.

💛 Who will get the kit?

Women who:

  • are overdue for cervical screening
  • find clinic appointments difficult
  • feel shy, embarrassed or uncomfortable
  • have cultural or personal reasons for avoiding the test

The NHS will contact you if you are eligible.

💛 Is it safe?

Yes. The test checks for HPV, a virus that can cause cervical cancer. It is simple, private and safe to do at home.

💛 How does it work?
  1. The NHS sends the kit in plain packaging
  2. Follow the easy step‑by‑step instructions
  3. Put the sample in the prepaid envelope
  4. Post it back — no stamp needed
  5. You will get your results by letter, text or phone
💛 What if I don’t have a GP?

You can still get help. You can register with any GP practice for free, even without:

  • passport
  • proof of address
  • immigration documents
